Uncle Aik, as Aik Nam San is affectionately known, rents a mobile “office” at a HDB void deck in Jalan Besar where he helps mostly senior citizens to fill in various types of forms, or to read official correspondences from government agencies.
While he could retire, he saw a need in the community and chose to start a form-filling service to help the residents who have difficulties dealing with official paperwork.
“I’m happy to have found a meaningful job to pass time.”
Although he runs this form-filling service as a business, the 69-year-old sometimes goes out of his way to help those who are in need. For example, he would personally accompany his customer to hand in the completed form or he would not charge those who have financial difficulties. These grateful customers would buy him food or drinks to repay his kindness.
Do say “Hi” if you pass by Uncle Aik’s “office” next time.
